DIY - Purple Orchid Centerpiece

Published by: Carlise (Carla) Shepperd on 9th Oct 2009 | View all blogs by Carlise (Carla) Shepperd
Submerged purple orchid centerpieces topped the guest tables, perfectly complementing the linens.
I love featuring centerpieces like this that I know that any small budget bride can recreate and for very little money. For this centerpiece the vases are varying heights with Orchids string together that float upwards. The Orchids are anchored by a few small stones at the bottom of the each vase. I've added the links to all the supplies you can use to recreate this piece for under $10.00. Just click on the prices as usual to be linked to each item .

One Stem Bicolor Dendrobium Orchid  - $1.79

I suggest using this real Orchids for the centerpiece s to ensure that the float properly since some have had trouble getting artificial flower to float!

White Floating Candles 1-3/4" Disc - 20 for $7.99

Add one per vase which are listed below starting with the smallest vase which is 7 1/2 inches tall. The next size is 9" in height and the tallest is 12 inches.

7 1/2 " Glass Cylinder Vases - $1.00

Glass Cylinder (9" tall) Vase - $3.69

I'm glad you do and I added the images back into the post that some how had magically disappeared. You can make an exact replica with all the products. I like it very much too.

Great post.. thank you soo much. This helped me out tremendously!! I just actually came from wal mart and i found 10 1/2 inch cylinder vases identical to the ones above for $2 for those brides on a budget!! they are in the floral section right next to the decorative rocks

Are the flowers in water or gel? How do they stay up if it is in water?
  • Carlise (Carla) Shepperd
They are in water! Real flowers naturally float to the surface.

I love this centerpiece!!!. Did you actually try to submerge leis from save on crafts?
  • Carlise (Carla) Shepperd
Hi Anna, see I edited it out and added real Orchids that you can buy wholesale at fifyflowers.com for $1.79 a stem since some had trouble using the Lei.

I love the centerpiece too! I was wondering how many stems are used in each total centerpiece (for all 3 vases)? Just to get an idea of how many I would need... also, my computer isn't the best- did you submerge them with the stem or how did you string them together. I can't see it but I see they are separated. Thanks so much!!
  • Carlise (Carla) Shepperd
    Hi Kristen!

The stems and held down by a clear string like fishing line!! The strings are tucked under the rock in the bottom and they are Orchids are floating upwards!! A least one stem per vase to be safe and you can get the fishing line at Walmart and get the thinnest string that you can!! I have to upload photos ofone I recreated but others did it with just put the stem of Orchids in between the rocks without the string effect and it looked beautiful too!! I have to do some mock-ups soon to share or ask my Florist friends to do one!!

Thank you for your response! How exactly do you get the flowers onto the fishing line? Will you be posting the pictures you took with the stem of orchids in the water once you do the mock up? I do like the clean look of the centerpiece above but wonder if it will end up being a lot of work??? Thanks!
  • Carlise (Carla) Shepperd
Yes Kristin, it's a lot of work, you've got to be really careful especially depending on the type of vase you use. You would push the fishing line through the bottom of the Orchid and then tie a knot big enough where it won't pull through when it starts to float. But you can experiment cause I was thinking of using tape wrapped around etc. to make sure that you won't have flowers coming lose if the table shakes. But you can always inquire as to how much it would cost to get done by a florist!!

Thank you!!! I'm wondering if it would just be easier to include the stem and weigh it down with the stones. You still think it would look nice? I just like the way they look so clean and crisp in the vase without the extra. Hmm... something to think about. Thank you again for your quick resonse!

I think these center pieces are amazing. This will not be my first wedding and the dress I picked out has purple orchids on it.. I am excited to try and re create this...

I love these center pieces as well, and was wondering how far in advance can they be made without compromising the orchids appearance.

    Thanks!!!

To be honest, I am not sure Lisa. Perhaps you can do a sample centerpiece to test it for yourself!! :)
