Recipe For Making A Box Cake Taste Homemade

It's true that cupcakes are cheaper than a full wedding cake and if you choose to bake the cupcakes yourself, you'll save even more. However, not everyone can or likes to bake. You can cheat and use a cake mix from a box but you run the risk of having them taste a little artificial. However, if you follow the simple recipe that I've posted below for you, no one would know they weren't baked from scatch.

Step 1: Look at the directions on the cake mix,
Step 2: Add one more egg (or add 2 if you want it to be very rich),
Step 3: Use melted butter instead of oil and double the amount,
Step 4: Instead of water, use milk.
Step 5: Mix well and bake for the time recommended on the box.

I found this recipe at Fabulessly Frugal!!

Do u have to refrigerate these cupcakes since they have milk in them?

    Amy,

I would refrigerate them if you are not serving them right away but I usually leave mine out all day after I making them and just put it in the fridge at night. You can always take it out a few hours before serving though. I've never had mine spoil.

So today I decided to try this out and I am not sure what I did wrong. I used Pillsbury funfetti cake mix (thats all I had) and my cupcakes look more like english muffins could it be the mix or something else I did wrong?

Angela, it's the only recipe I use and they always come out great. I can not be sure what advice to give you. Was your melted butter hot? If it was that would have started the cooking process and you don't want that to happen. I would just make sure that the melted butter is as close to room temperature as you can get it next time. Everyone that uses this recipe have had moist, delicious cakes or cupcakes. Good luck and I hope there will be a good report when you try it again.

Do you use margarine or real butter? If real then salted or not?
